In 2009, $111.9 million in EPA Brownfields grants was awarded to communities in 46 States, 4 Tribes, and 2 US territories to help revitalize former industrial and commercial sites, turning them from problem properties to productive community use. The grants include $37.3 million from the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act of 2009 that President Obama signed into law on February 17, 2009, and $74.6 million from the EPA Brownfields general program funding.

In 2008, the City of Petaluma was awarded a Revolving Loan Fund. This fund will provide low interest loans for Brownfields property owners to clean up their properties. Brownfields Cleanup Revolving Loan Funds provide funding for communities to capitalize a revolving loan fund and to provide subgrants to carry out clean-up activities at Brownfields sites. BCRLF Pilots are selected through a competitive process.

Additionally, due to the success of the first two Brownfields grants, the City of Petaluma was awarded another $400,000 Brownfields Assessment grant in 2009.
